Don Cherry Joins SportsCenter During Stanley Cup

On-Site With Levy And Melrose During Finals
The inimitable Don Cherry, best known for his colorful commentary during CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada telecasts, will share his opinions with ESPN’s SportsCenter audience beginning Friday, May 9 after Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
“Pairing Don Cherry and Barry Melrose will provide NHL fans with two of the most respected and opinionated voices in hockey today,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production. “SportsCenter will be the place to turn for Stanley Cup analysis, debate and highlights.”
During the Conference Finals, he will offer live post-game reports from the site of the Flyers/Penguins series. Throughout the Stanley Cup Finals, he will join ESPN’s Steve Levy and Barry Melrose on-site for pre- and post-game analysis. Cherry will continue his work for CBC throughout the playoffs.
Cherry will also appear on ESPNEWS and be heard on ESPN Radio.
Cherry will donate his ESPN fee to the Humane Society.
Cherry has worked for CBC since 1980 and made his name during the “Coach’s Corner” segment, a HNIC intermission feature. He coached the Boston Bruins in the 1970’s, leading his team to the Stanley Cup Finals twice, before ending his coaching career after one season with the Colorado Rockies (1979-80). He spent many years playing professional hockey, mostly in the American Hockey League. He played in one playoff game for the Bruins in 1955.
