January 30, 1982 – ESPN and the NBA announce first agreement:
- two-year contract (1982-83, 1983-84 seasons);
- 40 regular-season games and 10 playoff contests.
January 22, 2002 – ESPN and ABC announce six-year agreement beginning with the 2002-03 season. The wide-ranging agreement provides for coverage on multiple domestic television networks:
- (ABC, ABC Family, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic, ESPNEWS), ESPN International, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, as well as opportunities involving emerging technologies such as video on demand, interactive TV, broadband and video games development.
June 27, 2007 – ESPN, ABC and the National Basketball Association significantly expand their global relationship with ESPN’s most comprehensive digital rights package from any major professional sports league as well as enhanced television coverage in an eight-year extension beginning in 2008-09. Details include:
- more appearances by the league’s top teams on ABC;
- more exclusivity in the postseason on ESPN;
- expanded television and digital media rights for ESPN International;
- NBA content on at least 16 ESPN platforms: ABC, ABC HD, ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN2, ESPN2 HD, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN Deportes, ESPNU, ESPN International, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, ESPN360.com, ESPN Mobile Publishing and ESPN podcasts;
- the deal also covers new platforms ESPN creates through the end of the agreement in 2016.
