Jay Rothman is a senior coordinating producer in ESPN’s event production department and the lead producer of ESPN’s Monday Night Football and annual NFL Draft telecast. Rothman rejoined ESPN on a full-time basis in January 2001, serving as a producer for ESPN’s Sunday Night Football for five seasons (2001-05) before assuming his current MNF role in the fall of 2006, one of the premier jobs in sports.
Under Rothman’s direction, Monday Night Football has achieved overwhelming success, becoming the most-watched series in cable television history, as well as the only NFL series nominated for a Sports Emmy in the Outstanding Live Sports Series category the past three years (2006-08). In all, MNF has registered seven of the top 10 all-time biggest household audiences in cable history, including cable’s largest audience ever (13.0 million homes and 18.6 million viewers, 9/15/08).
Rothman and MNF director Chip Dean comprise one of the most innovative and talented production duos in the industry. They have worked together on football for 19 seasons, and their work resulted in ESPN's Sunday Night Football being recognized in 2004 with sports television's highest honor, the Emmy in the Live Series category.
Prior to joining ESPN, Rothman was a producer for ABC Sports’ college football broadcasts (1997-2000), where he was involved in regular-season coverage, in addition to the Rose, Fiesta and Orange Bowls. In all, he produced three National Championship Games for ABC.
Rothman, who continued to produce ESPN events while at ABC Sports, has produced a variety of top sporting events: NFL Draft (1995-present), X Games (1995-99) and the 1994 FIFA World Cup, plus numerous college basketball and football, Major League Baseball and National Hockey League telecasts. He also oversaw production of ESPN’s Arena Football League game telecasts in 2007 and 2008.
Rothman also produced ESPN’s coverage of the MLB Expansion Draft (1992), the ACC Basketball Tournament (1992-93), NCAA College World Series (1989-91) and more.
Rothman originally joined ESPN as an associate producer in November 1987. In 1990, he was promoted to studio producer, a position he held for one year before moving to the remote production department. From 1984 to 1987, Rothman was a graphics coordinator for CBS Sports, NBC Sports and Turner Broadcasting.
A native of Mt. Kisco, NY, Rothman received a bachelor of science in journalism from the University of Colorado in 1984.
