Ed Werder joined ESPN as a Dallas-based bureau reporter in September 1998. He covers news for the network’s National Football League programming – Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday Night Countdown (formerly NFL Prime Monday) and NFL 2Night. In addition, he also reports sports news for ESPN’s news and information programs, including SportsCenter. Prior to ESPN, Werder was the National Football League reporter for CNNSI, CNN’s Sports Tonight and CNN’s Sunday NFL Preview. He was responsible for weekly NFL game coverage, including CNN’s coverage of the NFC Championship Games in 1997 and ‘98, and Super Bowls XXXI and XXXII. Werder also covered the 1998 Final Four and baseball’s 1996 National League Championship Series. A native of Longmont, Colo., Werder has extensive background in print journalism, covering the Dallas Cowboys for the Dallas Morning News from 1992 to 1996 and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1989. He also served as the NFL beat writer for The Orlando Sentinel in 1991 and Denver Broncos beat writer for the Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera from 1984-89. Werder was an NFL reporter for The National, 1990-91, and a correspondent for Sports Illustrated,1987-95. While at the Dallas Morning News, Werder won an award for a series of reports chronicling the deteriorating relationship between Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Jimmy Johnson, now coach of the Miami Dolphins. He broke the news that Johnson would be replaced as the Cowboys coach, after rebuilding the team and winning back-to-back Super Bowls, by Barry Switzer. Werder, born May 3, 1960, is a 1982 journalism and communications graduate of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He is married with two children. |
