ESPN HD launched with the Texas Rangers playing the Anaheim Angels March 30, 2003.

In 2008, ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD will deliver more than 1,000 events in high definition programming.

ESPNEWS HD and ESPNU HD To Launch in 2008

ESPN will add two new high definition services in 2008.  On March 30, ESPNEWS HD will debut.The shift to HD will enable ESPNEWS to make the most of the 16 x 9 high-definition television viewing area, offering fans an enhanced viewing experience. ESPNEWS HD will also afford new graphic sponsorship placement opportunities for advertisers.

On August  28, ESPNU HD will begin telecasting and is projected to air approximately 200 HD events in its first year, ESPNU HD will offer exclusive live event coverage of college football, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, hockey and more as well as encore presentations of ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD and ABC HD college sports content. The shift to HD will also allow for additional sponsorship opportunities on the network.
