Steve Phillips joined ESPN prior to the 2005 Major League Baseball season as a baseball analyst. He primarily serves as a game analyst during ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball telecasts and as a Baseball Tonight studio analyst. Phillips also regularly appears on SportsCenter, Cold Pizza, Outside the Lines and ESPN Radio, in addition to frequent contributions to ESPN.com.

Phillips provided game analysis for ESPN during the 2004 regular season and studio analysis throughout the playoffs and winter meetings.

Phillips is the former general manager of the New York Mets (1997-2003). Under his direction, the team made two consecutive post-season appearances for the first time in club history, including the 2000 World Series against the New York Yankees.

Phillips first joined the New York Mets front office in 1990. Prior to his general manager role, he served as assistant general manager (1995-1997), director of minor league operations (1991-1995) and administrative assistant for minor league scouting (1990-1991).

Phillips signed a letter of intent to play college football at Northwestern University, but opted for professional baseball when he was drafted by the Mets in the fifth round of the 1981 draft. He spent seven years in the Mets farm system before ending his playing career with the Detroit Tigers organization following Spring Training in 1988.

Phillips took college courses during baseball off-seasons and earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1989.
