Jamal Mashburn joined ESPN as an NBA studio analyst for the 2006-07 season, appearing on a variety of the network’s news and information shows. Mashburn played 11 NBA seasons, including stints with the Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets. Mashburn was a prolific scorer, averaging more than 19 points per game to go along with 5.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists over the course of his career. Mashburn was selected fourth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1993 NBA Draft. He led all rookies with 19.2 points per game, set seven Mavericks rookie records, and was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie Team. In his second season, he played alongside Jim Jackson and then-rookie Jason Kidd. He is the third-youngest player to score 50 points in an NBA game (LeBron James is the youngest) and went on to break several franchise records. He was traded to the Miami Heat in the middle of the 1996-1997 season, then to the Charlotte Hornets in 2000. He became a leader of a young Hornets team, eventually earning an All-Star bid in 2003. Mashburn suffered through injuries during the 2003-04 season, limited him to only 19 games. An injury to his right knee forced him to sit out the 2004-05 season, and he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2005. Unfortunately, due to the knee injury, Mashburn never played for the 76ers and retired from the NBA in 2006. Mashburn was a collegiate star at the University of Kentucky, becoming the school’s fourth-leading scorer and a consensus First Team All-American by his junior year, prompting him to declare a year early for the NBA Draft. -30- |
