Veteran NBA play-caller Mike Breen is the lead voice for the NBA on ABC Sports and ESPN including the NBA Finals. He joined ESPN’s NBA team for the second season of coverage in October 2003 and now works primarily with two basketball Hall-of-Famers – Hubie Brown on ABC and Bill Walton on ESPN. In its review of 2004, The Sporting News named him one of 12 people in sports “to keep an eye on,” indicative of a rising profile in the industry.
Breen joined ESPN with 12 seasons of NBA play-by-play on his resume, having worked national telecasts for NBC and the Knicks for New York’s Madison Square Garden’s television and radio networks. Breen has also done NFL play-by-play for NBC and FOX. Also, Breen covered the WNBA at NBC, as well as men’s and women’s basketball at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Breen continues to work Knicks games on television and radio.
In 1998, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association named Breen “Broadcaster of the Year” in his native state of New York. A Fordham University graduate, Breen began his career in radio at WEOK/WPDH in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He worked in local radio and television in the New York area, including WNBC-AM, SportsChannel, MSG and, most prominently, on Imus in the Morning on WFAN-AM and simulcast on MSNBC.
